Media Hive is a workshop / performance event that happens at Santa Fe Complex in Santa Fe, NM, USA on the third Saturday of every month. It’s something that I helped start up with SFX and funding from the Santa Fe Arts Commission. You can read what it’s all about here.

I guess that’s what happens when you do websites for other people.

It figures though. I used to work at a great studio in Minneapolis and believe it or not, I didn’t get that much recording done. After an 18-hour day in the studio working for someone else, it was just hard to keep going, even if it was for me.

Now I just have to figure out what to do with that big white space on the right. I made an interactive soundscape mixer but it apparently requires a supercomputer connection handle all of the independent audio streams I want it to have. And I suppose I should make some music too.

AOF2 (0110000101101111011001102) is an album-length, chance-inpired, cut-and-paste reworking of Bach’s Art of Fugue. A MIDI score was chopped into bits, rearranged, and executed while being processed with a number of random-element incuding processes. Sounds complicated, huh? What I was really going for though was a radical reinterpretation that still sounded like Bach yet still managed to maintain the sense of ensemble.

It began with the idea to take a simple guitar progression, break it up into small loopable chunks, dump it into Ableton Live, and reconstruct it into something larger. As I was doing it, I felt like I was going through the same process I use when I work with field recordings. I really liked the way it came out so I decided to field record guitar.

WIRE=WAVE is music made by taking extended recordings of guitar manipulation and using various techniques and tools to find the moment within the mess (to paraphrase Hank Shocklee). It took a long time to do and I still like it a lot, which is really saying something.

Why would I even think of doing such a thing? Because I had been to High Mayhem in Santa Fe to attend a circuit beding workshop and performance by Minneapolis duo Beatrix Jar. All sounds were produced by the keychain and I have to say, I didn’t plan it this way, but T sounds really sad at the end.

This piece dates all the way back to 1997. I wanted to do something made up entirely of the things people say in between the things they mean to say and my then-roommate Matt Koegler had the brilliant idea to record C-SPAN and use it for the source material. (Incidentally, this is the same Matt Koegler credited with suggesting the name of the Frank Zappa album “Frank Zappa Meets the Mothers of Prevention.” He’s real good at suggesting.) Although it’s pretty short it took about 2 months to edit. Why the picture of Barney Frank? If you listen really close, you can hear him.

All of the content came from a field recording class trip to Lamy, NM. I took some of the students off on an illicit little side excursion to beat up large pieces of metal.
